Today, Derek Chauvin, the police officer who murdered George Floyd in May 2020, was found guilty of all three counts against him.
As I watched the court officer put handcuffs around Chauvin’s wrists and take him to jail, I realized there is still a long road ahead. But I am relieved for his family and for black people. Finally, some accountability.
So many BIPOC men and women have died by police brutality before George Floyd. But, why was this police involved murder so different this time and accountability finally occurred? Several reasons are involved as to why this particular murder garnered so much attention. The world was practically stopped due to Covid so people paid attention, it was video tapped and Chauvin’s actions blantantly disgusting.
But through this past year, an amazing movement occurred in Black Lives Matter and many people have woken up to systemic racism and police brutality.
We can today, relish in the relief, one less bad cop is out on the streets.
